Computer Speakers. An explanation of how personal computers are utilizing today's media with various forms of audio output ranging from 2 stereo computer speakers up to 7.1 digital surround sound systems.

Computer Speakers
Modern PCs are not the simple number crunching machines they once were. Over recent years the humble desktop PC has
evolved into a full multimedia suite capable of playing music and movies as well as the ever developing PC games. All these
applications require the computer speakers to reproduce decent quality sound audio which in turn requires some decent quality sounding speakers.
Computer speakers range from the simplest paired stereo configuration up to 7.1 surround sound, with 7 speakers of
differing size arranged around the focus, the listener. Obviously the scale of the speaker contains a huge variance in price and quality,
so deciding which computer speakers you need can be tricky.
For most operations any sound is fine for general day to day use, two small computer speakers capable of clearly reproducing the sounds the PC
needs to make will do ok, so long as you're not looking for extremely loud or crisp audio. As the number of computer speakers
increases, however, so does the level of immersion in the audio experience. A correctly positioned surround sound computer speaker
system can create a specific sound from any direction around the listener, allowing films to seem as if they are taking
place all around you. Directional computer speakers is also invaluable when playing a computer game, allowing the player to react to
sound objects appropriately for their direction.
One of the problems with 5.1 surround computer speakers or higher is the difficulty of finding places to put the speakers. Often
the PC will be in a corner, meaning that at least one ideal computer speakers placement position is floating in the middle of the room. So
the decision can often simplify to 'do I want to give over an entire room to my PC and it's peripherals'. If the answer is
yes, then 5.1 or higher surround computer speakers will enhance the audio capabilities of your computer greatly.
Generally speaking the more speakers you have, up to the cutting edge 7.1 systems, the more accurate the positional
sound will be. Sound quality however tends to depend on the actual computer speakers and the specific system used and as is often
the case as a general rule the more you pay, the better quality the goods you receive. It is also important to make sure
that the sound output of your PC is as complex as the speaker system you choose. If the PC is only outputting two channel
sound, you'll not get the most out of your 7 channel speaker system.
