Speakers. An explanation of how speakers turn electrical signals from an amplifier into physical movement which we can hear and the different types of vibrations which change what we hear.
 |
Speakers
The speaker is the part of any sound system which creates the physical vibrations the human ear detects and interprets
as sound. It accomplishes this by using an electromagnetic coil in a standing field to translate the electrical signals
from the amplifier into physical movement. The electromagnet is attached to a diaphragm, usually cone shaped, and the
vibrations of the magnet are expressed in the cone, which causes similar vibrations to occur in the air in front of it.
These vibrations travel through the air and are heard by the ear as sound.
|
Different frequencies of vibration correspond to different pitches of sound, from very slow vibrations which are the
low, deep sounds to very fast vibrations which are the high pitch sounds. The size of the cone determines it's ability to
vibrate at certain frequencies, it's harder to get a large cone to vibrate fast or a small cone to vibrate slowly. For this
reason larger speakers usually contain multiple drivers, with different sized cones for producing different pitch ranges.
The quality of the sound you hear from the speakers can depend on many different factors. Including the quality of the
materials used to make the speaker, for example some of the latest quality tweeters are being made using silk to give
a soft high pitch sound. The enclosure of the speaker also makes a great difference in the sound. Speakers are often
housed in a wooden surround because wood provides the best acoustic values. A thick tight sealed enclosure will ensure
a clean crisp deeper bass and fuller sound from the speaker.
